The University of the Balearic Islands, through the Interdisciplinary Laboratory on Climate Change (LINCC UIB), participates in an international consortium led by the network of cities Climate Alliance with the support of the European Federation of Cooperatives of Renewable Energies (Rescoop), which has recently been granted a contract by the European Commission for the management of the Secretariat of the Clean Energy Initiative for the Islands of the European Union.
This Secretariat has been created with the main objective of providing support and advice to the Mediterranean islands and other insular areas of the European Union, in order to ensure the achievement of a successful transition to clean energies.
In this sense, the researchers of the Interdisciplinary Laboratory on Climate Change of the UIB (LINCC UIB) will participate in a comparative study on the energy systems adopted by the Mediterranean islands, as well as identifying and boosting the exchange of good practices between different European regions and promote decarbonization initiatives among all the relevant actors, both civil and private.
Likewise, the project members will also advise decision makers in the Mediterranean islands in the design and preparation of decarbonization plans for the energy models of these territories. These plans will take the form of a methodological guide for the energy transition, and will establish a gradual approach to develop an integrated and complete decarbonization plan for an island economy; one that takes into account all the challenges and specific conditions of insular territories (geographic insularity, small economies of scale due to the fact that their size and population are limited, the need for skilled labour, etc.)
